“DMX Is An Artist. He’s Way Too Big For A Mixtape”

With this week’s buzz surrounding rap star DMX’s upcoming The Weigh In EP, SOHH reached out to contributing producer Dame Grease for an inside scoop on the project.

Promising nothing but raw music, Grease said the EP would definitely serve as a teaser for X’s upcoming solo album dropping this summer.

“Man, this sh*t is the sh*t. It’s a blowout. [laughs] Basically. We completed the album, Undisputed and we completed this at the same time,” Dame told SOHH referring to the upcoming Weigh In EP. “We wanted to go and give the fans something because it’s been like six years from the last album. We wanted to give the fans a teaser of the music before the album comes. We wanted to get this out there to the entire world. DMX is remembered for a lot of things like movies but he just wants people to remember him for his music. I just got the artwork and we’re probably going to put that out and a new track later this week. Next Tuesday, we’re releasing the whole EP.” (SOHH)

Grease also went on to compare the EP-to-LP release to legendary rap crew N.W.A.‘s early 1990′s music projects.

“All things come full circle, man,” Dame added. “When you think about the rap game back in ’98, one of my first X songs was ‘Get At Me Dog’ and so you look at from when that was out to where the rap game is now, you’re just looking for that substance music ‘with’ that raw sh*t that everybody f*cks with. We actually cut about three albums but we wanted to just get this project ready strictly for the streets. If you know, I’ve been doing the mixtapes for a minute with Max B, French Montana and those guys. DMX is an artist. He’s like way super too big for a mixtape. So we decided to put this out with no deejay and in an album format. It’s almost like, I don’t want to do comparisons, but imagine [N.W.A's] 100 Miles and Runnin’ [EP] before [their] N*ggaz4Life [album].” (SOHH)

The EP, which drops next week, features heavyweight collaborations courtesy of Snoop Dogg and Lil Wayne.

The Weigh In EP has features from artists such as Snoop Dogg and Tyrese and also includes an interlude featuring Lil Wayne. At press time, confirmed production on the project comes from Fredwreck Moog, Rich Kidd, and X’s longtime collaborator, Dame Grease. The EP marks one of the first projects from X since his last album, Year Of the Dog…Again, was released more than five years ago in 2006. (Leadership)

Last week, Ruff Ryders producer Swizz Beatz talked about X’s return to the rap game after trials and tribulations with the law.

“X is working on a couple side of things on the personal side of his life as people can see in ‘Couples Therapy.’ …. I like that he’s dealing with demons that’s in his life that’s been interfering with his music and his life.” (“The Breakfast Club”)

The Weigh In officially drops Tuesday, May 15th.

Kanye West Wins Big But No-Shows, J. Cole & Nicki Minaj Both Lose “Best New Artist” At Grammy Awards

News: Kanye West Wins Big But No-Shows, J. Cole & Nicki Minaj Both Lose “Best New Artist” At Grammy Awards

Award-winning rapper Kanye West stole the show at Sunday night’s 54th annual Grammy Awards without even being in physical form by taking home four golden trophies during an evening ceremony which featured tribute performances, the return of Chris Brown and more.

The event got off to a somber start as host LL Cool J paid his respect to the late Whitney Houston.

“There is no way around this. We’ve had a death in our family.” He then led the audience in prayer to “our fallen sister, Whitney Houston. “Heavenly father, we thank you for sharing our sister Whitney with us,” he said, as celebrities like Lady Gaga and Miranda Lambert bowed their heads in prayer. “Though she is gone too soon, we remain truly blessed to have been touched by her beautiful spirit.” He introduced a clip of a glowing Houston singing “I Will Always Love You.” (Associated Press)

Despite not being in attendance, Yeezy won multiple awards for joint work alongside Jay-Z and his own solo efforts.

And in a similarly dominant run, Kanye West and Jay-Z’s “Otis,” won Best Rap Performance in the first hip-hop award of the broadcast — the fourth award of the day for West, who was a no-show at the ceremony, despite leading the nominations with seven. During the pre-show, he picked up Best Rap Song and Best Rap/Sung Collaboration for “All of the Lights” and Best Rap Album for that track’s source, “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy.” (Billboard)

The 54th Grammy Awards also marked the long-awaited return of R&B singer Chris Brown.

Chris Brown’s career rehabilitation from his arrest for the beating of his then-girlfriend Rihanna just before the 2009 Grammys took another step forward with a Grammy win and a performance Sunday. “We got one!” the 22-year-old Brown said during a short acceptance speech after winning a Grammy for best R&B album. Rihanna was given her turn to perform during the same hour, collaborating with Cold Play on stage. (CNN)

Although Alicia Keys caught attention with her Etta James tribute performance, soulful singer Jennifer Hudson embodied the show with an ode to the late Whitney Houston.

As usual, the awards show paid respects to the number of now-gone musicians and music executives, including British singer Amy Winehouse, Motown executive Ester Gordy Edwards, soul-music architect Nick Ashford and influential rapper Heavy D. Their music played, their images were shown, and a quiet — before an eruption of applause — fell over the house when they concluded with an image of Houston in a red dress, in her heyday, singing. Then, the house went dark. And a lone spotlight shone down to reveal the newly svelte Hudson poised and ready to deliver what might very well be the night’s best and most anticipated performance. She delivered the first a cappella notes of one of Houston’s biggest hits, her remake of Dolly Parton’s “I Will Always Love You” from the “Bodyguard” soundtrack. (MTV)

While rockers The Foo Fighters and singer Adele led the pack in wins, five and four trophies respectively, the Grammy ceremony also gave an award to late crooner Amy Winehouse.

British singer-songwriter Amy Winehouse, another recent pop music tragedy, was given a posthumous Grammy for her duet with Tony Bennett on the pop standard “Body and Soul,” from his “Duets II” album, which took a second award for Bennett as traditional pop vocal album. Skrillex landed an early pair for dance recording and dance/electronica album, for the “Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites” track and album. (Los Angeles Times)

Heading into the awards show with fans split between J. Cole and Nicki Minaj going for “Best New Artist,” neither hip-hop star walked home with the honor.

At last year’s Grammy Awards, Justin Bieber‘s fans were up in arms when the Canadian sensation lost the Best New Artist award to jazz singer Esperanza Spalding and this year’s award didn’t go over too well either. Nicki Minaj and J. Cole were both nominated in the category up against Skrillex, The Band Perry and Bon Iver, and Bon Iver took home the award. (RapFix)

Ludacris Reveals His “Best New Artist” Grammy Winner Pick

News: Ludacris Reveals His “Best New Artist” Grammy Winner Pick

Saturday, Feb 11, 2012 12:01PM

Written by Cyrus Langhorne

Grammy-winning rapper Ludacirs is hoping his “My Chick Bad” collaborator Nicki Minaj walks home with gold this weekend by revealing she is his pick for “Best New Artist.”

Applauding Nicki’s talent, Luda admitted he could not say enough about how much she deserves the honor.

His pick for Sunday night is clear: He wants to see Nicki Minaj to win Best New Artist. He worked with the MC on 2010′s “My Chick Bad,” off his Battle of the Sexes album. “I’m looking forward to seeing Nicki Minaj. I love her. I’m glad I got a chance to work with her. I’m extremely proud of her,” he said. “She’s just scratching the surface of what she’s capable of. So Nicki: keep doing your thing, girl.” (MTV)

Recently, Nicki said she did not expect to win any trophies at the annual ceremony despite mulitple nominations.

“When I was at the Grammys last year, it was like I didn’t even exist. And then to now be performing and nominated, it’s a big deal,” Minaj said in an interview. “I’m not going to be nervous about winning because I really don’t think I’m going to win anything. The way I look at it is, I know eventually, in my career, I’m going to have Grammys. This year is just about being nominated and feeling grateful, feeling like my fans and I have come a very long way and we’re just going to celebrate this moment. Nothing else matters – winning, not winning, it doesn’t matter. It just matters that they get to see a girl from the hood take these steps and continue to take these steps, just with hard work.” (Pandora Internet Radio)

This week, Grammy-winning singer Slim of R&B crew 112 told SOHH both nominated rapper J. Cole and Nicki are deserving of the award.

“J. Cole is an amazing artist. I would love to work with him. He’s a breath of fresh air,” Slim told SOHH. “He’s one of the cats that really does his thing. I think if he would have came out around the time I was out [in the 1990's], I think he would definitely have lasted this long. He’s one of those artists I really enjoy and think he’s just a breath of fresh air. And of course I like Nicki Minaj. Beautiful. It’s about time there was a female to stand up and really put it down and not just be in a box. She touches on both sides of the situation. Sky’s the limit is not even for Nicki Minaj. She’s got the universe. I really enjoy artists who are bigger than just artists. They’ve become brands and then leading a legacy.” (SOHH)

Rap star Kanye West leads this year’s ceremony with the most Grammy nods.

Adele is up for six Grammys including song and record of the year, for Rolling in the Deep, and best album, for 21. Rapper Kanye West leads the field with seven, while Bruno Mars and the Foo Fighters also have six each. Mars, also up for best song, record and album, said; “It feels incredible.” British band Radiohead are up for five awards including best rock performance and song for Lotus Flower. Winners will be announced on February 12th. (BBC UK)

The 54th Grammy Awards will be televised Sunday, February 12th from Los Angeles.

Drake Squashes Tattoo Artist Beef, “Everybody Can Now Move On”

News: Drake Squashes Tattoo Artist Beef, “Everybody Can Now Move On”

Thursday, Jan 26, 2012 5:28PM

Written by Cyrus Langhorne

Young Money star Drake has reportedly squashed issues with a California-based tattoo artist who made headlines last fall for tattooing his name across a woman’s forehead.

According to tattoo artist Kevin Campbell, Drizzy met him face-to-face to put matters to rest.

If you recall about a month ago, a die hard Drake fan tatted the rapper’s name on her forehead. “So he knew it was real.” Once Drizzy found out the tattoo was real and words were exchanged between Drake and the tattoo artist Kevin Campbell. But yesterday, Drake stopped by the shop to squash the issue with the tattoo artist. Kevin took to twitter to confirm the beef was squashed. “Drake beef officially squashed…Everybody can now move on. Only positivity from here on out,” he tweeted. “@drake Nice talking to you buddy, glad everything’s cleared up. It’s good that something positive came out of this whole fiasco. Stay up.” (Karen Civil)

Earlier this month, Campbell accused the rapper of semi-confronting him.

On Jan. 11, during a Twitter exchange with a user named @Matt_Kaleta, Campbell was questioned about whether the war of words with Drake ever amounted to anything. Campbell responded, revealing that the Toronto-born MC allegedly showed up to the shop he is employed at but failed to actually show his face. “guess you could call it sorted out. When Drake was in LA last, he parked out front the shop and sent in his huge security dude [sic],” Campbell tweeted. Campbell then went on to interact with Twitter user @KingLACity, informing him that the ‘Headlines’ rhymer “sent in the troops” rather than addressing him directly. “yeah, he should have just let it go, I doubt anything would have come of what he said anyway. It just made him look silly IMO,” the tattoo artist wrote. (The Boom Box)

In December, Drake gave a heated reaction to Campbell tattooing ‘DRAKE’ across a woman’s forehead.

“I have,” Drake admitted when asked if he had seen the female fan’s tattoo. “I want to meet her and understand what happened. That’s cool. I feel you, one hundred percent. That to me is absolutely incredible. I don’t even know if you can see it but this girl tattooed ‘DRAKE’ on her forehead. The guy who tatted it is a f*cking a**hole. I will tell you that. I don’t f*ck with that guy. F*ck you to that tat artist by the way because you’re an a**hole for real and you should lose your job and you should never do tattoos again and I don’t f*ck with you and if I ever see you, I’m gonna f*ck you up. But real sh*t though, I really, really like [it]. I want to talk to this girl and understand it all, you know? It was love. It’s surreal. I don’t even want to look at it anymore because it’s super surreal, you know? Yeah.” (Mando Fresko)

Around mid-December, Campbell taunted Drake’s image and the woman for going with his name.

“The funny thing is, I didn’t know who Drake was, I figured it was her hood or some sh*t, not some goofnugget R&B dude. She was really psyched about it. She had the sh*tty font all picked out on her iPhone ready to go and was pretty adamant about putting it on her forehead. She didn’t say a word about what it meant to her, some of the guys at the shop asked her, and she just kinda giggled at them. When I printed up the first image of the lettering, she wanted me to go bigger, so that it went pretty much from each side of her hairline to the other. I thought she shaved her eyebrows for the procedure, so when I put the stencil on the first time, it was right over her (missing) eyebrows, but she had me enlarge it a bit and push it up towards the hairline. But yeah, she acted as if she had planned it out for a while; though I’m not really sure how much extended coherent thought could actually go into getting such a stupid tattoo on your forehead.” (Vice)

“There’s No Artist That Has Had The Impact That Lil Wayne Has Had”

Exclusive: “There’s No Artist That Has Had The Impact That Lil Wayne Has Had”

Monday, Jan 16, 2012 4:05PM

Written by Cyrus Langhorne

In light of his new Deadest Rapper Alive book focusing heavily on Lil Wayne, SOHH decided to hit up author Pastor Jomo K. Johnson to find out why he decided to target Weezy instead of equally hated stars like Jay-Z.

Jomo claims Wayne’s ageĀ  has had a bigger impact on youth than a music mogul like Young Hov.

“I’ve been a fan of hip-hop for most of my life and I’m only 31,” Jomo told SOHH. “I’ve never seen an artist who has had the impact, influence and just overall impression that Lil Wayne has made on masses and especially the youth. Part of that is due to this being the Internet era. When 2Pac came out, the Internet wasn’t as big and he didn’t have that huge crossover effect. There’s no artist that has had the impact that Lil Wayne has had. In Philadelphia, guys are not only reciting his words, they’re reciting his dress style, his hairstyle, his tattoos, the way that he speaks, almost everything about him. Now you think about an artist like Jay-Z, he’s about 43 now so a lot of young people listen to him but they’re not imitating him. They may recite his lyrics but they’re not looking to dress and follow his style. Lil Wayne’s the link, being only 29, to the younger generation and the older generation although he’s been rapping for about 18 years now.” (SOHH)

A couple weeks ago, Johnson gave SOHH his top reasons readers should cop his new book.

“The first reason is because you’re never going to read or find another book like Deadest Rapper Alive. I say this for many reasons. Number one, it’s written by a hip-hop artist. I’ve done hip-hop in the past. We also did a hip-hop soundtrack to the book. I’m also a hip-hop fan and a student. I’ve studied hip-hop for a long time. I have a real good knowledge of how it began and the intricate aspects of it. I’m also a pastor. With those three combinations, you’ll never find a book written by a pastor, hip-hop fan and artist. That reason of itself, just because of my background, is big.” (SOHH 5 Reasons Why)

He also said the book focuses not only on Weezy, but hip-hop as a whole.

“I would say this is probably one of the most thorough understandings of the psychology of hip-hop. The book is not just about Lil Wayne. He is the focus of it but it shows how hip-hop is able to have such a tremendous impact on lives and it shows how hip-hop began. I actually go back to Melle Mel and Kool Herc and how they were the forerunners [of hip-hop]. So I’m going back and giving a real thorough timeline and chronology for hip-hop. That’s something the reader will get. They’ll be able to see the different turns and twists in hip-hop to what it is today.” (SOHH 5 Reasons Why)

In his book, Johnson cites Wayne’s mid-2000′s Tha Carter album series for igniting his claim to fame.

“It is the testimony of Scripture that Dwayne Carter, as a blatant blasphemer of God, by the promotion of anti-Christian philosophies and principles, through his professed love of acts of disobedience toward God, and by the conduct of his own lifestyle, is under the influence of demonic spirits. And, as being under this influence, he himself is being used by Satan to lead countless millions down a path of deception and destruction. And these millions happen to be urban youth. Lil’ Wayne as an unbelieving man is not only under the influence of Satan but he is also involved in demonic occult practices. Those who are involved in this type of practice will fully have interaction with demonic spirits in order to receive some earthly benefits. These benefits are usually money, influence, protection, or revenge. These benefits did not come without costs. The demonic spirits will use that person to promote Satan’s purpose which is to deceive man into destruction while desecrating the image of God.” (Deadest Rapper Alive)

Tattoo Artist Claims Drake Sent Security At Him In Los Angeles

News: Tattoo Artist Claims Drake Sent Security At Him In Los Angeles

Thursday, Jan 12, 2012 10:11PM

Written by Cyrus Langhorne

Tensions between Young Money star Drake and a tattoo artist who taunted his image last month are still escalating with accusations suggesting Drizzy semi-confronted the matter in Los Angeles.

According to tattoo artist Kevin Campbell, he was recently confronted by Drizzy’s security.

It just made him look silly IMO,” the tattoo artist wrote. (The Boom Box)

Days before Christmas, Campbell said he was game for a faceoff with Drake.

“@ReeMuhh please say that Drake actually wants to f*ck me up. I will totally fight Drake. One on one. Tell him to name a time and place.,” he tweeted December 23rd.

“Can anybody confirm that this Drake guy actually wants to fight?”

“@drake I’m a lover, not a fighter. PS Next to lovin’, I like fightin’! I like fightin’, it’s excitin’!”

“@dharmicX Too funny! A dude who probably wipes his a** with 100$ bills actually cares about me calling him an R&B goofnugget is hilarious.” (Kevin Campbell’s Twitter)

A day prior, Drake gave his heated reaction to Campbell tattooing ‘DRAKE’ across a woman’s forehead.

I don’t even want to look at it anymore because it’s super surreal, you know? Yeah.” (Mando Fresko)

Around mid-December, Campbell poked fun at tattooing the rapper’s name on the lady customer’s face.

“The funny thing is, I didn’t know who Drake was, I figured it was her hood or some sh*t, not some goofnugget R&B dude. She was really psyched about it. She had the sh*tty font all picked out on her iPhone ready to go and was pretty adamant about putting it on her forehead. MMG’s Pill Melts Down Over Label, “Artist Sign Deals, Label Doesn’t Do Sh*t For Them”

News: MMG’s Pill Melts Down Over Label, “Artist Sign Deals, Label Doesn’t Do Sh*t For Them”

Wednesday, Dec 28, 2011 9:11PM

Written by Cyrus Langhorne

Maybach Music Group’s Pill is raising eyebrows Wednesday (December 28) night after publicly experiencing a Twitter meltdown over label woes.

Although he did not directly reference MMG boss Rick Ross or any specific person, Pill questioned the lack of label support he has received over the past few years.

“No TV and No Radio.. U do the math. I bet u can name you favorite artist and the turn on the tv and see the video and hear it on the radio. It’s not rocket science. Radio and TV b4 I had a deal, none after and u ask why Pill ain’t blew all the way up. Artist sign deals, label doesnt do shit for them or don’t even know to work the artist. time wasted. Ask Wiz Khalifa what Warner Bros did for him. I’ll wait.. dropped em. Atlantic signed em put em on TV and Radio and he sky rocketed. Mind you, whn I signed I had one of the biggest records in 09? “Trap Goin Ham” never touched TV never touched radio. [sic]” (Pill’s Twitter)

He also compared his 2009 buzz to platinum-selling rap stars Drake and Nicki Minaj.

“Now go back and do your research and see what unsigned artist was neck n neck with Drake’s So Far Gone in 09? Pill 4180: The Prescription. If I remember tht list correctly. It was Nicki Minaj, Drake, Pill, Wayne, Jeezy. Nw what the hell ws a new cumber like me doin on that list? Because IM DOPE!! That’s why, u ain’t gotta believe it but I know it and won’t ever stop until I get that spot I deserve. Peace. Thanx. Top 10 freshman cover of the New Times, unsigned hype MTV fire starter cover Creative Loafing, German magazine’s, French radio, Jimmy kimmel. Did a movie with Evan Ross and Brittany Snow, Had a documentary air at the UN summit in Geneva, Switzerland, Mark Ronson‘s album, toured. in London, countless shows in the states, Short Films, etc. and that with No TV or Radio. Now imagine some push and TV and radio would do. [sic]” (Pill’s Twitter)

Last week, the Atlanta rapper denied rumors suggesting he split ways with Ross’ MMG.

Despite being the only artist of MMG — besides latecomer Stalley — without a radio single, Pill states that he was somewhat surprised to hear the whispers. “I’m not sure how they started actually,” he tells The BoomBox. “I noticed it when people started f—ing with me on Twitter, but I don’t know the source of it. I mean, it is what it is. It’s mostly Twitter — people that follow me or don’t follow me that hate on me daily, and wanna start s—.” (The Boom Box)

Speculation on the Southern rapper’s Maybach status hit the Internet earlier this month.

There is a nasty rumor going around about the (Former… allegedly) MMG rapper claiming he has been dropped from Rick Ross’ MMG label. This comes somewhat expected since the rapper, who hails from Atlanta, has fallen into the the depths of MMG, being overshadowed by Meek Mill, newly signed Stalley, and the successful MMG debut, Ambition, by Wale. It’s not all bad for Pill; he has kept himself busy touring and appearing with the group itself the last couple months. Perhaps this could be a marketing ploy to spark interest? Time will tell. News: UPDATE: Tattoo Artist Responds To Drake, “Please Say That Drake Actually Wants To F*ck Me Up. I Will Totally Fight Him”

Written by Cyrus Langhorne

West Coast tattoo artist Kevin Campbell has reportedly responded back to Young Money’s Drake and his threat of beating him up once they meet face-to-face.

Hopping on Twitter, Campbell said he is game for a faceoff and questioned Drizzy’s issues.

Yesterday, Drake gave his reaction to Campbell tattooing ‘DRAKE’ across a woman’s forehead.

“I have,” Drake admitted when asked if he had seen the female fan’s tattoo. “I want to meet her and understand what happened. That’s cool. I feel you, one hundred percent. Last week, Campbell poked fun at tattooing Drizzy’s name on the customer’s face.

“The funny thing is, I didn’t know who Drake was, I figured it was her hood or some sh*t, not some goofnugget R&B dude. She was really psyched about it. But yeah, she acted as if she had planned it out for a while; though I’m not really sure how much extended coherent thought could actually go into getting such a stupid tattoo on your forehead.” (Vice)

Asked if he felt wrong about the eye-catching tattoo, Campbell said it was the woman’s decision at the end of the day.

“I guess I feel bad that this dumba** got the name of the softest motherf*cker in hip-hop tattooed on her forehead. But what makes that any less valid of a tattoo to her? I lost a little sleep over it that first night, wondering if I wanted to be known as the a**hole who tattooed “Drake” on some crackhead’s forehead. None of the face tattoos I had done prior to this got any publicity, so I was a little surprised that this one took off like it did. I’m still kinda debating whether or not I should send you guys the whole set of pictures, I don’t really want to paint the shop in a bad light but it is what it is. In the end, she paid me to do this to her, which really means she did this to herself.” (Vice)
