Roc Nation protege J. Cole is fed up with social networking tool Twitter and recently dished out why he is willing to lose 2.3 million followers.

In Cole’s perspective, too many artists are heavily focused on Twitter rather than the quality and confidence in their music.

“I’m not on Twitter no more, I’m not doing it and I’m not going to … As an artist, I’m sitting back and I’m watching all these other artists who I respect — some of them are big artists — on Twitter fighting for attention. Every tweet is like, ‘I’m looking for attention. Retweet me!’ I saw that and same thing about songs, dropping songs, it all comes from this place of fear, like I don’t want nobody to forget about me. It really comes from that place. But really your body of work speaks for you, so it’s doing work even when you’re not knowing it. But because people ain’t talking about you on Twitter or you’re not the trending topic or your mixtape ain’t trending, you feel a certain kind of way.’ (Bootleg Kev)

Last month, rap star Nicki Minaj raised eyebrows after deleting her Twitter page.

“Do you,” she asked radio host Tim Westwood when he professed how much fans miss her on Twitter. “I know. [laughs, reads statement from Westwood] ‘Nicki Minaj, please come back to Twitter. We love you and it isn’t the same without you. Do it for the Barbz and Kens and everyone who loves to wear pink on a Friday. Give me life.’ … [Am I going to come back?] No. Tim, I can’t. I miss my Barbz. [They miss me,] but I can’t come back. I just can’t Tim, don’t make me, please don’t. Let’s move on.” (Tim Westwood TV)

However, she later returned after losing over 11 million followers.

When she previously said goodbye to Twitter, the Head Barb left behind over 11 million followers, making her the most popular MC on the social networking platform, and the 11th most followed individual in the world. Due to these massive numbers, Nicki’s account hasn’t rebooted yet, but over the past hour her follower count has jumped from 67,675 [1:45 p.m. EST] to 191,002 [2:30 p.m. EST]. @NickiMinaj has also yet to post an official comeback tweet. (XXL Mag)

A few months ago, Young Money’s Drake described his issues with Twitter.

“I’ll tell you, my biggest thing was, I remember, it was on Twitter. I remember the day my mom was getting surgery and someone came on Twitter and they were like, ‘Yo, Drake, I hope your mom dies.’ You don’t really mean that. Like, you know you’re going to see something bad. Out of 1000 compliments, it’s so crazy. It’s basically, like, when you used to sit there as a kid, and want to know what everyone is thinking. That’s your superpower. [Twitter is] knowing what everyone is thinking.” (The Source)

Shawnna Opens Up On Ludacris, T-Pain, Rap Comeback & More On “The Breakfast Club” [Video]

News: Shawnna Opens Up On Ludacris, T-Pain, Rap Comeback & More On “The Breakfast Club” [Video]

Thursday, May 10, 2012 5:40PM

Written by Cyrus Langhorne & Soraya Joseph

This week, former Disturbin’ Tha Peace rapper Shawnna spoke on her relationships with Ludacris and T-Pain, her feelings towa making a hip-hop comeback and more on Power 105.1′s “The Breakfast Club.”

While mum on details involving her bond with Luda, Shawnna explained to the Breakfast Club hosts why an official T-Pain record never came about.

“Well you know, all good things come to an end,” Shawnna told co-host Charlamagne Tha God when explaining her official departure from Ludacris and DTP. When asked about making music with Pain, she went on to say “T-Pain is my boy. It wasn’t really like a signing situation. We were going to put out a project together and everyone just kind-of ran off with that. … He at the time was going through some things with Konvict [Music] Records. I think it was Atlantic, he was going to do some shifting. And then about a year or so later, you heard the announcement about him going to Young Money Cash Money.” (“The Breakfast Club”)

Pressed about her past label situations, Shawnna stood by her unwillingness to give up on her artistic freedom as an artist. She also explained to co-host Angela Yee what stopped her from attaining more success.

“That’s because I [didn't] bend over, so to speak. You know, I’m not just a puppet,” she told them in response to her setbacks in the industry. “I’m not just going to go where you want me to go. When it comes to women having their voice and speaking up for themselves, they always try to shut you [down] like.. ‘Oh you can’t work with her.” (“The Breakfast Club”)

Comparing her comeback to the recent resurgence of former labelmate 2 Chainz, the female emcee explained to Charlamagne she’s confident there is a side of her people have yet to hear.

“I definitely feel like I didn’t have a chance to really get out there and show people the full extent of my talent. That’s why I’m really trying to come back.. If I stop now, I’ll feel like I gave up. So I’m going! …Right now, I just want to continue to put music out. I got a lot of artists that are willing to work with me, I don’t really need a label to contact artists… So it’s like, I’m just going to use all the network I’ve collected. And once I get a buzz going.. I’lll sit down and say “Ok this is where I want to go with things. But I’ve been gone so long.. My main focus is to flood the industry with Shawna Music.” (“The Breakfast Club”)

When asked by Envy about her feelings towards Nicki Minaj, she further opened up on the current wave of female rappers and their impact in the industry.

“Um, I think it’s dope. I think after Nicki came out and just like, freight-trained the whole game, it’s wide open. Everybody wants to know “Ok, what the girls gonna do now? Where the rest of the girls? Where they at” and I’m like “we right here” I think we need to stick togetgher and help each other out and help create outlets and opportunities for each other so we can remain this way. I remember a couple of years ago they were saying female rappers are extinct. Yea?” (“The Breakfast Club”)

Drake Gets Hit W/ More Celebrity Dating Rumors, Hollywood Actress Sets The Record Straight

News: Drake Gets Hit W/ More Celebrity Dating Rumors, Hollywood Actress Sets The Record Straight

Young Money star Drake cannot help but remain the Internet’s biggest alleged bachelor with new reports claiming he is romantically linked to Hollywood star Rashida Jones.

Reports of Drizzy hooking up with the former “The Office” star emerged this week.

The “Parks and Recreation” star was linked to the rapper in the latest edition of In Touch magazine, while editors also suggested the “Best I Ever Had” hitmaker was seeing Tyra Banks. (ABC 4 News)

However, a Jones rep has since come forward to nix the hype and speculation.

In Touch thinks he’s also seeing Banks, noting that the pair was “just spotted having frozen yogurt” at Disneyland. Whoa — then they must be serious. NOT. Gossip Cop already pointed out that Drake and Banks ran into each other at Disney by accident, and that they hardly know one another. And as for the rapper’s status with Jones? A rep for the actress tells us, “This is totally false, they are just friends.” (Gossip Cop)

Last fall, Drake talked about befriending Jones and his respect for the television star.

When asked about Quincy Jones‘s Harvard-educated daughter (and star of Parks & Recreation) Rashida Jones, Drake pauses, then offers: “Rashida has a beautiful, beautiful spirit. So talented, so funny. I met her at Rihanna’s birthday party. I was DJing and she liked my set.” (Complex)

Over the weekend, rumors also surfaced linking Drake with former supermodel Tyra Banks.

The rapper is sparking rumors he’s romancing Tyra Banks after they were spotted enjoying a date at Disneyland. The hip-hop star, real name Aubrey Graham, has fuelled fresh speculation about his love life after he was photographed enjoying a day out with the America’s Next Top Model host at the California theme park. In pictures obtained by fan site DizzyDrake.com, the pair was also snapped laughing together while grabbing sweet treats at Yogurtland. Drake has previously been linked to Rihanna, Nicki Minaj and British music sensation Rita Ora, while Banks recently ended her relationship with businessman John Utendahl. (Fox 23 News)

Rick Ross, Nicki Minaj, J. Cole & More Unite, Summer Jam 2012 Line-Up Annoucned [Video]

News: Rick Ross, Nicki Minaj, J. Cole & More Unite, Summer Jam 2012 Line-Up Annoucned [Video]

Maybach Music Group’s Rick Ross, Nicki Minaj, J. Cole and more will make their way to the annual New York radio station Hot 97′s Summer Jam stage set to take place next month as the show’s main headliners.

Announced Thursday (May 3) afternoon, show performers were unveiled during the “Angie Martinez” show.

Moments ago, New York’s Hot 97 crew officially announced the line-up for this year’s Hot 97 Summer Jam. As always, fans can expect a star-studded cast, with Waka Flocka Flame, French Montana, Maino, Young Jeezy, J. Cole, Rick Ross, DJ Khaled & Friends and Nicki Minaj all confirmed to perform at the one-day showcase. The Summer Jam takes place on Sunday June 3rd at the Met Life Stadium in New Jersey. (Soul Culture UK)

Additional artists set to take the stage include Maybach Music Group’s Meek Mill and Young Money’s Tyga.

Other announced performers: DJ Khaled, whose “All I Do Is Win” was an unoffical Summer Jam anthem two years ago, witty Wale, who has lately transformed himself from an underground favorite to a mainstream hitmaker, the pugnacious Maino, the diminished but still relevant Young Jeezy, and bubbling-under Meek Mill, who stands a decent chance of following his mentor Rick Ro$$ to mainstream recognition. There’ll be some (relatively) fresh faces, too: the affable Big Sean, Jay-Z protege J. Cole, quick-rhyming Young Money emcee Tyga, French Montana, Mavado, and 2 Chainz, who features prominently on “Beez in the Trap,” Nicki Minaj’s latest hit.
And what about that Black Hippy collective that’s been making so much noise lately? Well, Kendrick Lamar and Schoolboy Q will be joining Pusha T and Big K.R.I.T. on the Village pre-show stage. That’s a heck of a lot of talent on the undercard; hopefully, Hot 97 will deem those rappers worthy of mainstage performances next year. (The Star-Ledger)

Last year’s event also featured Rick Ross who performed various hits.

And here, onstage at Giants Stadium, was Rick Ross–his chest puffed out, his black-and-yellow Hawaiian shirt open wide but still somehow stretching tight–cheered on by fifty thousand strong. They welcomed his street anthem, “B.M.F.,” chanting a chorus and cadence that, in various incarnations, has blasted out of car windows on 125th ever since it came out last summer: “I think I’m Big Meech, Larry Hoover.” Rick Ross can make up a lot of things, but even he couldn’t make this up. (Village Voice)

The show even gave concertgoers an opportunity to see Lil Wayne and Drake perform together.

It wouldn’t be Hot 97 Summer Jam without an appearance from Lil Wayne. Mr. Carter, baring his tatted chest, performed new material for the first time live including his Carter IV single “How to Love” and Kelly Rowland‘s “Motivation” with Shanell. He brought his Young Money family and Lloyd out for “BedRock,” set the stage ablaze with his father Birdman (“Fire Flame”), and capped things off with Drake (“Miss Me”) and Rick Ross, who let it all hang out during “John” and DJ Khaled’s “I’m on One.” (Rap-Up)

Kanye West Explodes Over Kim Kardashian, Kris Humphries, Amber Rose, Wiz Khalifa & More [Audio]

News: Kanye West Explodes Over Kim Kardashian, Kris Humphries, Amber Rose, Wiz Khalifa & More [Audio]

Wednesday, Apr 4, 2012 9:17PM

Written by Cyrus Langhorne

Grammy-winning rapper Kanye West has taken to the studio to unleash some bottled up emotions ranging from ex-girlfriend Amber Rose dating Wiz Khalifa to falling in love with reality star Kim Kardashian.

On the new Hit-Boy-produced track “Theraflu,” Yeezy unloads his emotions over the mic.

After reporting that Kanye West’s G.O.O.D. Music crew would drop their “Mercy” single on Friday (April 6), Funkmaster Flex has gone ahead and premiered a different track from the project. It’s called “Theraflu” and features Kanye rapping over a synthy Hit-Boy beat alongside DJ Khaled. Compared to the grandiose statements we’re used to from Kanye, this is definitely a more standard rap track. Yeezy calls himself “Swag King Cole” and then gets into brag mode. The song also features the following Amber Rose/Kim Kardashian-referencing lines that will surely hit every trashy celeb blog tomorrow: “The whole industry wanna f*ck your old chick / The only n*gga I got respect for is Wiz / And I’ll admit I fell in love with Kim / Right around the same time she fell in love with him.” (Exclaim)

Ye also takes a shot at Kardashian’s estranged husband Kris Humphries, who he claims affiliate Jay-Z could have removed from the New Jersey Nets.

“And I’ll admit I fell in love with Kim, around the same time she had fell in love with him/Well that’s cool, baby girl do your thing,” Ye raps, “Lucky I ain’t have Jay drop him from the team/La Familia, Roc Nation, we in the building….” (“Thermaflu”)

Initially, the track was believed to be off Yeezy’s upcoming G.O.O.D. Music compilation album.

Earlier today Pusha T took to Twitter to announce that “Mercy,” the first single from the upcoming G.O.O.D. Music album would drop this Friday. But, just a few minutes ago, this track popped up online. Titled “Theraflu,” this new song from Kanye West and DJ Khaled is apparently the album’s first single. So, either Pusha T was wrong, the internet is wrong or Yeezy just decided to give us an early treat. Either way, I’m sure we’ll still get to hear “Mercy” on Friday and I’m sure that “Theraflu” is indeed off of the G.O.O.D. Music album. (We Got This Covered)

However, hip-hop personality Miss Info claims the track could land on Ye’s upcoming solo effort.

OMG. I was just talking to DJ Khaled today at the MTV2 Hip Hop Squares shoot about this d*mn song! And suddenly it pops up via the big homie Funk Flex! We knew Kanye was itching itching itching to get this out before he drops that GOOD Music “Mercy” single on Friday…but it was supposed to come out this past Friday. Better late than never. And the song is whoa….Kanye got some sh*t off his chest! By the way…from what I understand, this is actually a Kanye West single off his own solo album (which will follow the GOOD Music compilation). (Miss Info)

Nicki Minaj Swallows Sophomore Jinx Fears, “This Album Is Gonna Sell So Much More Than ‘Pink Friday’”

News: Nicki Minaj Swallows Sophomore Jinx Fears, “This Album Is Gonna Sell So Much More Than ‘Pink Friday’”

Tuesday, Apr 3, 2012 10:50AM

Written by Cyrus Langhorne

Young Money star Nicki Minaj is not letting the theory of a sophomore jinx wear her down, claiming she believes the new Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded will outsell its 2010 predecessor.

Asked about her thoughts on the sophomore jinx, Minaj went on to bash the theory.

“H*ll no! This album is gonna sell so much more than Pink Friday,” Minaj told radio host DJ Clue. “Ask me this question two years from today, Clue. With me, I’m never about first week and all that. I like to look at it for the long haul. I’ma travel, I’ma meet my beautiful babies, my Barbz everywhere, and this is my first time I’m gonna get to do a world tour, so the album is gonna do its thing.” (Power 105.1)

Recently Minaj said she hoped the new album would inspire her followers.

“If there’s one thing I want people to take away from it, it’s just that little girls can aspire to be anything, and that’s all I want people to see,” Nicki said in an interview. “Whether you follow Nicki Minaj’s blueprint or not, just don’t be afraid to experiment and don’t allow people to knock your hustle just ’cause it ain’t something that you’re used to seeing.” (MTV)

Last week, Cash Money head honcho Birdman called Nicki the best rapper alive.

“I say she is, but if she’s not today, within time she will be. No female ever will be able to sell more records than her, have more singles than her, have more number one singles than her, have more awards–no more nothing. She had the most singles by a female last year. Her accomplishments are gonna speak for themselves.” (Complex)

Having sold over 1.7 million copies to date, Minaj’s Pink Friday debuted at number two back in 2010.

Young Money rapper Nicki Minaj’s long-awaited Pink Friday finally hit retail shelves and debuted at No. 2. With a week under her pink belt, the emcee’s debut album has pushed out 376,000 copies. (SOHH Sales Wrap)

Written by Rosario Harper

Atlanta rap newcomer Future is planning a star-studded introduction with his upcoming Pluto debut album as a new tracklisting shows guest features from Drake, T.I., Juicy J and more.

The 15-track album is also highlighed by music veterans such as R. Kelly and Snoop Dogg.

1. “The Future Is Now” feat. Big Rube
2. “Parachute” feat. R. Kelly
3. “Straight Up”
4. “Astronaut Chick”
5. “Magic (Remix)” feat. T.I.
6. “I’m Trippin’” feat. Juicy J
7. “Truth Gonna Hurt You”
8. “Neva End”
9. “Tony Montana” feat. Drake
10. “Permanent Scar”
11. “Same Damn Time”
12. “Long Live the Pimp” feat. Trae Tha Truth
13. “Homicide” feat. Snoop Dogg
14. “Turn on the Lights”
15. “You Deserve It” (Pluto)

In early March, speculation of guest features hit the Internet.

Future is launching into space with some familiar faces this spring. The hip-hop newcomer has enlisted a star-studded cast of collaborators for his debut Pluto. The Dungeon Family-bred rapper’s Epic Records debut will land in stores on April 17 featuring appearances from hip-hop heavyweights T.I., Drake, Ludacris, R. Kelly, and Snoop Dogg. The album will include the T.I.-assisted single “Magic” and street anthem “Tony Montana” featuring Drake. Prior to Pluto’s arrival, Future will drop a video for “Same D*mn Time,” described as a “super-charged call out record.” The visuals, directed by Dr. Teeth, were filmed in his hometown of Atlanta and will premiere later this month. (Rap-Up)

Although not actually listed to appear on his new album, Future recently named rap heavyweights Kanye West and Lil Wayne as his two favorite emcees.

“My three wishes are just be respected out the game. I want respect from everybody. And just make a successful clothing line and company. I’m not going to put a number on it. Just to have a great career…My favorite rappers are, I can’t really say. I like Kanye because he’s so creative. He’ll just do anything. I like what Kanye [West]‘s bringing to the game. Lil Wayne. I like Wayne…[The future?] [I see myself] running rap, running this era. The radio is going to sound like Future.” (Global Grind)

In November, Future spoke openly about rejecting Lil Wayne’s request to hop on his “Tony Montana” remix.

According to Future, not only was Drake vying for a guest spot on the hot track, but his Young Money labelhead Lil Wayne wanted to jump on it, too. “He told me how much of a fan he was of mine and he was like, ‘Wayne wants to get on it, too,’” recalls Future, who declined the offer. “I was like, ‘Wayne not gonna get on it.’ Too many big artists on the song already… That’s why I didn’t want him and Wayne on the song.” (XXL Mag)

Future’s Pluto is slated to drop, Tuesday, April 17th.

Lil Wayne’s Neighbors Throw A Fit + More Marvin’s Room Drama?!?

SOHH Whatcha Think: Lil Wayne’s Neighbors Throw A Fit + More Marvin’s Room Drama?!?

Monday, Mar 19, 2012 10:04AM

Written by Jeezis Peace aka Papa Smurf

“You snakes, stop hiding in the grass/ Sooner or later I’ll cut it knock the blades in yo ass.” Remember that Lil’ Wayne line from the timeless classic, “Go DJ”? Well it’s time for Weezy to put down the weed and pull out the weed wacker as his neighbors are beginning to complain about the size of his foliage.

[Editor's Note: The views expressed in this column do not necessarily reflect those of SOHH]

According to reports, the grass and weeds surrounding his New Orleans mansion have grown higher than his tube socks, and have become something of an eyesore for this otherwise clean-cut community.

Lil Wayne has been told to cut his grass. The Times-Picayune reports the rapper was cited for high grass and weeds at his 10,000-square-foot mansion in a gated subdivision in Kenner, La., a suburb of New Orleans. The Code Enforcement Department issued the ticket to Dwayne Carter, the New Orleans-born singer’s given name, sometime between Feb. 26 and March 2, according to a list released by the city.(Huffington Post)

To be fair, no one has time to cut the grass when you’re mobbin’ with your goons, wildin’ out to Beyonce‘s “Single Ladies.”

In other news … Drizzy Drake is once again dealing with “Marvin’s Room” melee. The song that never died has become the case that pushes forward as the chick heard in the background (you know — the one on the phone) claims Drake still owes her a few racks.

Rapper Drake thinks the woman who is suing him for royalties from his hit song “Marvin’s Room” is entitled to the amount of money she’s already received — zero dollars and zero cents. Ericka Lee — who provided the voice of the girl on voicemail for the song — filed a lawsuit last month claiming Drake promised a co-writing credit and split of the profits on the hit song … as well as claiming Drake sent her texts saying the song was “s**t without you.”(TMZ)

drake-real-2012-01-09-300x300.jpg

Drake insists she wasn’t with him shootin’ in the gym and therefore, is entitled nothing but a couple Patron shots and a meeting in the bathroom stall. Cold world.

Drake filed his response last week, saying he never promised her a dime and that “she consented to the use of her voice in the song ‘Marvin’s Room’ for no compensation.” Drake also says the two never had a romantic relationship, as she claims, and he never threatened her over her complaints about getting paid for the song.(TMZ)

SOHH Watcha Think: Drake’s song was wildly popular and mega successful, is shorty entitled to some of that “Marvin’s Room” money?

Welp. Looks like today is Young Money Day. Check out this “Stay Schemin” freestyle by Mr. Outta My Lima Bean himself, Cory Gunz.
