“A legend I’ve never worked w/before” (Nicki Minaj’s Twitter)

Last week, the cover art for her deluxe sophomore album made its way to the Internet.

Nicki Minaj has unwrapped an official cover art for the deluxe version of her upcoming studio album “Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded”. The femcee plays with vibrant-colored paints like she did in the artwork for the standard package, but she gets racier and messier in this new one. The Young Money first lady ditches her top, and rocks wild blonde hair. The “Moment 4 Life” rapper is pictured from the shoulders up, so she gives the camera an eyeful look at the top of her boobs. Despite her wilder appearance, she looks more mannequin-like in this new artwork. (Ace Showbiz)

The project will officially land on store shelves next month.

The cover of the standard edition of Nicki Minaj’s Pink Friday 2: Roman Reloaded has been circulating the internet for a few weeks. The “Super Bass” rapper has unveiled the cover art for the deluxe edition. Rap’s favorite barbie poses topless with paint strategically splashed on her nude body. Pick up your own topless Nicki Minaj album cover when it drops on April 3rd. (The Urban Daily)

Rappers Diddy, Nicki Minaj, Joell Ortiz and more have virally united to take part in an active campaign against Ugandan leader Joseph Kony to exposed his notoriety for abducting thousands of children to become soldiers.

Diddy took to his Twitter to spread the word of Kony and promote the campaign.

“EVERYONE STOP WHAT UR DOING!!!! if u dont know what #StopKONY2012 is about watch this short movie > http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y4MnpzG5Sqc&sns=tw RT to da world!!!,” he tweeted March 7th.

“Dear Joseph Kony, I’m Gonna help Make you FAMOUS!!!! We will stop YOU #StopKONY ! All 6,OOO,OOO of my followers RT NOW!!! Pls!” (Diddy’s Twitter)

Minaj has also shown her support for the anti-Kony movement.

“RT @KidsOfUganda: Watch and Share! Please do your part and help spread the word about this injustice. #STOPKONY http://s3.amazonaws.com/kony2012/kony.html,” she re-tweeted. (Nicki Minaj’s Twitter)

Additional artists including Ortiz, DJ Enuff and more have come forward to co-sign the campaign.

This week, music fans everywhere are sure to have seen their favorite artists take to Twitter and Facebook to support ‘Kony 2012,’ a video that aims to make Joseph Kony a widespread name to raise support for his arrest and set a precedent for international justice. Emeli Sande, La Toya Jackson, DJ Enuff and Joell Ortiz, among other hip-hop and R&B major players, have spread the message of the film and campaign. Filmmaker Jason Russell, alongside his toddler son Gavin, tell the story of a boy named Jacob throughout the 30-minute clip. When they met 10 years ago in Uganda, Africa, Jacob was “running for his life, due to Joseph Kony, leader of the African rebel group L.R.A. — Lord’s Resistance Army. (The Boom Box)

Reports claim Kony has abduced over 60,000 children as leader of the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA).

A new campaign spreading across the Internet says it has one goal in mind: Make Joseph Kony, the Ugandan leader of the violent Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) “famous” so he can be brought to justice. Kony is undeniably brutal, and the World Bank estimates that under his leadership the LRA has abducted and forced around 66,000 children to fight with them during the past two decades. In October, President Obama committed 100 U.S. troops to help the Ugandan army remove Kony. (Washington Post)

Drake Defends Emo Image, “They Want Me To Be More Emotionally Disconnected Like Them, So I Drop The Ball & Fall Off”

News: Drake Defends Emo Image, “They Want Me To Be More Emotionally Disconnected Like Them, So I Drop The Ball & Fall Off”

Friday, Mar 2, 2012 12:10PM

Written by Cyrus Langhorne

Young Money front man Drake lets fans know he has no intentions of switching the style up from the emotional-laced records people are used to hearing from him, admitting the “emo rapper” label does not bother him.

Based on a recent VIBE excerpt, Drizzy delves into why critics are so persistent on him changing up his style.

“People calling me goth or emo or whatever is weird for me to hear because I really don’t hear that in my music.” Still, he has no plans to temper his emotions in his lyrics. “They want me to be more emotionally disconnected like them, so I drop the ball and fall off. That’s where the backlash comes from. They want you to under-deliver so badly, and when you don’t they can’t handle it.” (VIBE)

Last October, the Canadian-bred emcee said too much focus on altering his sound could have damaging effects.

“If I worried about how I’m gonna look saying this, then I wouldn’t make half the music I make,” Drizzy told MTV News. “People nitpick at me for being emotional or tapping into emotions, but like, man, we all die one day; that’s just how I want to be remembered…The running commentary or the jokes don’t really affect me, ’cause that’s what I’m going for — I don’t want to be a guy that blends in with all the other generic rap music. I want to be the guy that stood out and pinpointed life emotions for women, men, young people, old people or whatever it is. So I don’t trip, that’s what I want. I welcome it.” (MTV)

In September, Young Money affiliate Jason Stein shared his input on Drake’s image being the scapegoat of industry jokes.

“Drake is a very emotional rapper, bordering R&B melodrama, and was a child actor,” Stein posits. “When you couple that with being on the Young Money label, which is considered a pretty tough group, and his swagger or braggadocio, there’s an unusual juxtaposition that people start to question, and then poke fun at.” (E! Online)

Last summer, the YMCMB crooner opened up about embracing emo music.

“I only really know how to do one thing. I don’t know how to make generic songs about the struggle and things that aren’t about me, I just know how to make songs that are about me,” Drake told FADER writer Judnick Mayard. “If I make a song that’s emo or emotional, then I guess yeah, I’m going to stick to that. I make songs about my life, because if you want me to be honest with you, that’s the best way I know how. The things I’ve experienced and the things I’ve lived. That’s what I like to do.” (The FADER)

G.O.O.D. Music Protege Questions YMCMB’s Worth, “You Sell More, But…”

News: G.O.O.D. Music Protege Questions YMCMB’s Worth, “You Sell More, But…”

Friday, Feb 24, 2012 5:30PM

Written by Cyrus Langhorne

G.O.O.D. Music’s Cyhi The Prynce appears to have taken note of today’s buzz surrounding Cash Money/Young Money inking rap-metal crew Limp Bizkit by questioning their quality of work compared to his team’s.

Taking to Twitter, Cyhi compared the Birdman and Lil Wayne-led YMCMB to G.O.O.D. Music and Roc-A-Fella.

“To me YMCMB is mid and Rocafella/GoodMusic is kush you sell more pounds of mid but which one would you rather smoke #imjustsayin,” he tweeted Friday (February 24). (Cyhi The Prynce’s Twitter)

Friday morning, Limp Bizkit’s leader Fred Durst announced his new label home.

“The game is missing danger, electricity, and rock n roll!!!!” Cash Money Limp Bizkit,” he tweeted Friday.

“Rock sh*t doesn’t rock anymore! They say the whole game done went pop so I’m back in this ho! #CMLB” (Fred Durst’s Twitter)

Following the recent Cash Money signings of rap veterans Busta Rhymes and Mystikal, “Why Stop Now” producer Sham “Sak Pase” Joseph spoke to SOHH about YMCMB’s radio dominance.

“A lot of people are very indifferent about that decision,” Sham told SOHH, referring to Busta’s recent signing to Cash Money,” but I think from a business aspect, it’s got to be very attracting toward Google [Music] that Busta Rhymes has access to the biggest artists in the game right now. The reality of it is 70 percent of radio, I promise you, is controlled by Young Money. I don’t see why there’s a big issue. They’re winning, so, I think a lot of people feel since he’s been in the game for so long and has done so many things for hip-hop, he probably could have started his own label and do x, y and z. But they’re a huge machine that’s winning.” (SOHH)

In November, Birdman cited his reliance on artistic freedom for making Cash Money a winning team.

“Whatever they bring to the table, whatever their vision is, [my role is] just to back it up and let them be the artist that they want to be and we support what they want to do,” Birdman said in an interview. “We never was [the type] to try to tell no [artist] how to do music, that’s not what we’re about. We like to let an artist be an artist and we support what they want to do.” (MTV)

Drake, Rick Ross, Soulja Boy & More Suffer Fake Death Reports

News: Drake, Rick Ross, Soulja Boy & More Suffer Fake Death Reports

Saturday, Feb 4, 2012 12:56PM

Written by Cyrus Langhorne

Young Money star Drake, Rick Ross and Soulja Boy Tell Em all made overnight headlines with false reports circulating online claiming they were all dead.

The fabricated claims all started when reports stated Hollywood star Eddie Murphy died last night (February 3).

Drake is not dead, nor is Rick Ross, LeBron James, Eddie Murphy and Soulja Boy. Drake and the four other celebrities all battled fake death reports overnight. While fans have grown tired of online efforts to fictitiously report their favorite celebrities died, someone last night took it upon themselves to kill off not just Drake but four other male celebrities, in one evening. Friday began with false claims that Eddie Murphy had died. But by evening, as that false report was put to sleep, another fake death report struck Drake and Rick Ross simultaneously. Meantime, the remains of a fake report about Soulja Boy and LeBron James individually were still picking up pace. (LA Late)

Following the speculation, media gossip website TMZ debunked Murphy’s death reports.

Celebrity Web site TMZ verified that Murphy was in fact alive after MediaFetcher.com triggered the false report. Several other celebrities have been claimed dead in false reports. Those celebrities include Adele, Rick Ross, LeBron James, Jon Bon Jovi, Charlie Sheen, Adam Sandler, Too Short, Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Bacon, Luke Perry, Jack Black, Will Smith, Jaden Smith, Tom Green, Mac Miller, Tiger Woods, and George Clooney to name a few. (International Business Times)

Drizzy’s healthy status was exposed when he appeared at a Super Bowl XLVI event yesterday.

We are not sure what sparked this death rumor but the “Marvin’s Room” rapper is very much alive! Just last night Drizzy was celebrating and gearing up for the upcoming Super Bowl. Drake hit the red carpet for ESPN’s ‘NEXT’ Event at the Oliver Street Building in Indianapolis and he looks very alive and well to us. He strutted his stuff and was too cool for school with his superstar shades. The Young Money artist just dropped his video for his single “Practice” yesterday so perhaps Twitter deaths are a sign that your popularity has risen and you’re on the right track? (Global Grind)

Coincidentally, Rick Ross suffered two seizures last fall which caused an online uproar centered on his medical status.

“On the flight, I had a seizure and when I snapped out of it and they had told me what happened, I’m like, ‘You bugging. Call the jet, we finna keep it moving.’ … I felt a little wore out but I felt like I could keep going and that’s what it was,” Ross told “106 & Park” hosts Terrence J and Rocsi. “I boarded a jet and I had another seizure and when I snapped out of that one, I woke up in front of a doctor and he asked me basically, ‘When was the last time you slept eight hours?’ And I said it had to have been at least five years. … I would get two hours of sleep and keep moving — me being the hustler. That has to stop. I was fortunate enough, the doctor ran a battery of tests on me from cancer, diabetes, HIV, et cetera, et cetera and I came back totally healthy.” (“106 & Park”)

More Bow Wow Money Woes + Which Rapper Was Named GQ’s ‘Best Dressed Man’?

SOHH Whatcha Think: More Bow Wow Money Woes + Which Rapper Was Named GQ’s ‘Best Dressed Man’?

Monday, Jan 30, 2012 1:43AM

Written by Jeezis Peace aka W-2 Live Crew

Now she wanna photo, you already know tho. One ring rules ‘em all, that’s the motto n*gga. Frodo. What’s good young world? Ayo it’s tax season: And no, black people, you can’t claim Red Tails as a dependent, I don’t care how many times you went to see it. But, you can be thankful you ain’t got the tax man shakin’ you down for over 100K, like the homie Bow Wow.

[Editor's Note: The views expressed in this column do not necessarily reflect those of SOHH]

Maybe it was an oversight, maybe it was intentional, but Uncle Sam wants his racks. Late last year, was reported that Mr. Wow [pause] owed the IRS a nice chunk of change, but a recent report indicates the sum may be much more than previously thought.

In November, it was reported that Bow Wow owed over ,000 in unpaid taxes from 2006. Now, TMZ reports, it appears as though Bow Wow is in more trouble with the IRS than originally thought. A new tax lien was filed on January 9 in Georgia, saying Bow Wow owes ,279.62 for unpaid taxes from 2008 and another ,700.91 from 2010. In sum, Bow Wow owes 6,086.14. (Hip Hop DX)

6,086.14 in unpaid taxes. You know it’s serious when the government wants their 14-cents. I think The RZA would agree that the sh*t is … f*ckin’ ridiculous. Dah well. I’m sure he’ll pay up and all will be well again.

In other news … GQ Magazine is known for its insightful articles, award-winning photos and 3,000 cologne ads per issue. But the popular men’s mag is also known for it’s annual crowning of ‘Best Dressed Man.’ This year, the award goes to UK rapper Tinie Tempah

Rapper Tinie Tempah has been crowned this year’s best-dressed man – while the Duke of Cambridge has dropped out of the annual list. The Wire star Idris Elba, The Dark Knight’s Christian Bale, Kasabian guitarist Sergio Pizzorno and Stone Roses frontman Ian Brown … The worst-dressed list is topped by US rapper Chris Brown. (Press Association)

Oh yeah: GQ named Chris Brown ‘Worst Dressed Man.’ Last year, I saw a homeless dude wearing a t-shirt that said, “Hi Hater.” How Chris lost to that guy is beyond me.

chris-brown-mad-2012-01-30-300x300.jpg

The ‘Everybody Hates Chris’ campaign continues.

For those of you unfamiliar with rappers from across the pond, Tempah was the cat that bought the Back to the Future Nike’s (aka The Marty McFly’s) for over 35K last year. Yo don’t wear them sh*ts in the hood bruh, you gonna really need a flying skateboard to get away.

British rapper Tinie Tempah has reportedly paid ,500 in a charity auction for a pair of limited edition 2011 Nike Mag sneakers. The shoes, which are based on a design worn by Michael J. Fox’s character Marty McFly in the 1989 movie Back to the Future Part II, have been produced in a run of 1500 pairs and are being sold 150 pairs at a time on eBay’s Fashion Vault site. (Rolling Stone)

SOHH Watcha Think — Does a rapper’s fashion sense influence how much you enjoy their music? Yo, before I roll out, I wanna leave you with Tyga’s “Rack City” remix feat. Wale, Fabolous, Young Jeezy, Meek. Loso, T.I. and Meek did their thing on this joint. Enjoy.

Following the Billboard honor, Cash Money’s Birdman issued a statement accepting the accolade.

“We got so much more we need to do,” Birdman says. “We dominate rap, but we need to dominate R&B. We need to dominate pop, gospel, country–we’re a brand, so we should be able to put out all these different types of music. We just got to keep grinding.” (Statement)

Rather than focusing purely on selling ability, Billboard’s Power list centered on business success and power moves.

The Billboard Power 100 list is about more than album and ticket sales; the artists featured are all actively involved in making impactful business decisions for their careers. In the case of Beyonce, she has recently been behind multi-million-dollar branding deals with L’Oreal, Coty and Target, and her clothing line House of Dereon continues to boast an international presence. Meanwhile, Jay-Z is one of the most celebrated artists to make the jump from the stage to the boardroom. He served as CEO of Def Jam Records and, in 2008, brokered a deal with Live Nation (said to be worth 0 million) to create Roc Nation, a management, music and entertainment company with a roster that includes Rihanna, J. Cole, Willow Smith and Ester Dean. His interests outside of music (Rocawear, Translation Advertising and stakes in 40/40 Club and the New Jersey Nets) have also grabbed headlines and helped to feed his bottom line. (Billboard)
